A number of colleagues have asked about the process and learnings from this approach.  Here are the details:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Pick a # Tag for the event.  For example, we used #L2009.&lt;br /&gt;* Ask your participants who have Twitter access in the classroom or conference, to use that in all of their messages.&lt;br /&gt;* We used a web based application called: SPY to display a real time display of these Tweets behind the speakers on a large screen and on a plasma display in front of the podium.  SPY is at http://spy.appspot.com&lt;br /&gt;* You just add a search term, eg. #L2009 and SPY will display, in full screen mode, a real time monitoring of the related messages.&lt;br /&gt;* The impact is pretty different. For the speakers, they kept one eye on the display in front of us.  I would use this to steer specific questions or comments that were posed by the participants.&lt;br /&gt;* For the audience, they had a cable news like feed to watch in back of the speakers. Some loved it, some hated it. But, it was interesting.&lt;br /&gt;* As a facilitator, I liked the experiment and it really pushed me to drive the conversation in new directions.&lt;br /&gt;* For some speakers, I kept the monitor in front of us on and turned off the back display.&lt;br /&gt;* And, we had one instance of someone who was flooding the screen with very commercial messages from another location. (I chose to turn off the feed for a while, until I could "coach" to them)&lt;br /&gt;* One variation, is to just have a laptop near the instructor/speaker - with a switch to display messages from time to time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will see lots of experiments about the best use of a Back Channel in live events. As medidas atingem quatro instituições de ensino que, juntas, concentram 54,7% dos 760.599 alunos de graduação à distância no Brasil. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;São elas: Universidade do Norte do Paraná (Unopar), Universidade Estadual de Tocantins (Unitins), Faculdade Educacional da Lapa (Fael, no Paraná) e Centro Universitário Leonardo da Vinci (Uniasselvi, em Santa Catarina). As quatro instituições foram as primeiras submetidas a um pente-fino do MEC, por terem um grande número de alunos e serem alvo de denúncias de irregularidades e falhas de conteúdo e de avaliação. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;— Elas cresceram rápido demais. Estamos dando um freio nessa expansão, com um choque de qualidade — diz o secretário de Educação à Distância do MEC, Carlos Bielschowsky. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Os centros de atendimento, onde estudam mais de 60 mil universitários em 1.200 municípios, estão proibidos de receber novos alunos. Os atuais estudantes poderão concluir os cursos, mas depois as unidades deverão ser desativadas. Boa parte não tem biblioteca, laboratório, sala de estudos nem acesso à internet na proporção exigida de três alunos por computador. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Instituições não poderão aceitar novos alunos&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A restrição atinge principalmente a Unitins e a Fael, que mantêm 1.276 centros de atendimento; e o Uniasselvi, com 61 unidades. Essas instituições só poderão receber novos alunos nos pólos credenciados.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Já a Unopar deverá limitar a 35 mil o número de novos alunos em 2009, uma redução de cerca de um terço — neste ano, mais de 50 mil calouros ingressaram na instituição, que atende 108.940 universitários. A Unopar terá que alterar seu material didático: segundo o MEC, apenas 25% do conteúdo consta nos livros, e com base nisso são feitas as provas. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Na modalidade à distância, a aula é transmitida por satélite para milhares de alunos em telessalas. Os alunos comparecem ao centro uma vez por semana. O restante é feito via internet. A situação mais preocupante, segundo Bielschowsky, é a da Unitins e Fael, que atendem seus alunos por meio da empresa Eadcon, que mantém franquias no país. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;— (A empresa) extrapolou. Participa do processo acadêmico de maneira inadequada — disse o secretário.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O diretor de Desenvolvimento e Qualidade Acadêmica da Eadcon, Francisco Sardo, nega irregularidades. Segundo ele, a empresa oferece os meios eletrônicos para a transmissão das aulas. A parte acadêmica, afirma ele, é responsabilidade da Unitins e da Fael. Os dirigentes das instituições elogiam a iniciativa do MEC e dizem que criaram seus cursos quando não havia regras claras sobre a oferta do ensino à distância.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;— A legislação foi muito dura. A estrutura é muito cara. Temos que ter esse tempo de readequação. Nosso propósito é buscar a qualidade — diz o reitor da Unitins, Humberto Falcão.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O reitor do Uniasselvi, Malcon Tafner, diz que o custo dos cursos é muito alto.
